POWER REGULATION FOR PARTICLE ACCELERATORS All applications needing powerfull and ultra-stable magnetic fields use direct current power supplies with a long term stability of the nominal current value:
In many cases the most intense magnetic fields are created using superconducting magnets. Their power supplies must be equipped with ultra fast means of absorbing the high stored energy to prevent local overheating due to 'quenches". They must also be current-programmed. Programming can be done by computer or by the power supply
itself.
